A pediatrician is a medical doctor who manages the physical, behavioral, and mental well-being of your child from birth until age 18. Pediatricians are trained to diagnose and treat a broad range of childhood illnesses. Regular visits help track your child’s growth and development over time. Here are some fun activities to help prepare your child for pediatrician visits:

At-Home Activities

Playing doctor is an activity that helps familiarize a child with medical tools and procedures. Let your child be the doctor first, giving a check-up to a favorite stuffed animal or doll with a toy medical kit. This allows them to feel in control and understand the process from a different perspective. Then, you can switch roles, with you acting as the pediatrician.

Reading books or watching age-appropriate shows about visiting the doctor also helps demystify the experience. Choose stories that portray doctor visits as positive and straightforward. The characters in the stories might feel nervous, but learn that the doctor will help them stay healthy. This exposure provides a simple narrative for your child to follow.

Drawing pictures of the doctor’s office can be another useful method. Ask your child to draw what they think the office looks like or what happens during a visit. This offers insight into their thoughts and any misconceptions they may have. You can talk about their drawings and gently correct any inaccuracies in a simple, factual way.

Before and During the Visit

Talking to your child about the upcoming appointment a day or two in advance helps prepare them for the event. Use simple, neutral language to explain what will happen and provide them with a clear and predictable sequence of events. Bringing a comfort item from home, such as a favorite toy, book, or blanket, gives your child something familiar to hold in a new environment. This can provide a sense of security and a distraction if they are uneasy.

During the visit, explain what the pediatrician is doing in real-time. Be a calm and supportive presence for your child. Your relaxed demeanor helps show them that the situation is normal and safe.

After the Appointment

Once the visit is over, offer praise for their cooperation. This reinforces positive behavior and connects it directly to their actions during the check-up. Planning an activity for after the appointment, such as visiting the park, can help create a positive association with the day’s events. This allows your child link the doctor’s visit with a pleasant outcome, making future appointments less daunting. Talking about the visit later in the day helps your child process the experience and address any questions or feelings they may have about the pediatrician visit.
